Regenerate the fire afflicted forests of Attica in Greece

Impact

  • Each tree planted, is estimated to produce over 117 kg of O2 annually and sequester over 0,22 tons of CO2.
  • The efforts are focused in areas that have been burnt over 2 times, thus being unable to regenerate by themselves. Our work helps revitalise the soil.

Cost Breakdown

  • 30% Sourcing local and quality saplings that are 1 - 2 years old
  • 10% Using professional tree planters for the planting to ensure high survival rates
  • 5% Post planting management (Clearing away long grasses and weeds once a year, nutritional elements for the trees etc)
  • 5% Project monitoring
  • 40% Watering over the summer months for 2-3 years after the planting
  • 10% Operational costs.

Plant a tree to help restore the damage that was caused by the devastating fires of 2021 and earlier years. We are aiming to plant over 1.000.000 trees within the next 3 years. The species we plant are resistant to fires (Cupressus Sempervirens, Ceratonia Siliqua and others). We plant the trees in licensed locations and we take care of watering the trees for the next years until they are self-sufficient.

Project

Operation Green Attica

Attica is home to over 6.000.000 residents and its forests are reducing with alarming speed. The fires of 2021 devastated great spans of land and the need to assist nature regenerate is urgent. We have launched an initiative to plant 1.000.000 trees within the next 3 years in the area of Attica, thus helping with the CO2 absorbtion over Athens capital. The tree species are native trees, growing in the mediteranean areas, resistant to fire and fast growing.

Threat

Attica's forests are in danger. Improper use of land and general negligence, but also harsh weather conditions with high winds and extreme high temperatures in summer, have been the cause of many serious wildfires over the last years. Nature in certain locations of Attica has been burnt over 3 times. If we do not act fast, the desertification of Attica will be apparent in the following years. Wildlife, having lost its home, is coming closer and closer to urban areas, seeing wild boars and even wolves in the northern suburbs of Athens. We must take action now to still have a hope for tomorrow.

Solution

The solution is the reforestation of available land with tree types that are indigenous but also fire resistant, in order to stop the uncontrollable expansion of future wildfires. Those tree species (Cupressus Sempervirens, Ceratonia Siliqua, Acacia and others) have high endurance in harsh weather conditions, are low in water requirements and are much more resistant to the fire than the previously existing pine trees.

About

we4all

We4all is a non-profit environmental organization that was founded in 2018 after the wildfires of Attica that cost the lives of 100 people. Our mission is to help Earth heal and to remind people that this planet is our home. Our main focus is on reforestation campaigns, both in Greece and globally and we are putting great efforts in the education and increasing awareness of children. We believe it is equally important to invest in the future as much as caring for the present.
